THE CUT-AND-SEW and SEAMLESS GARMENT INDUSTRY

2024-07-01

Widths (or tubes) of fabric are knitted, and then the knitwear is shaped and cut following either traditional paper patterns or advanced computer-generated designs. The pattern pieces are subsequently assembled to form a complete garment. In this process, one or more designers may collaborate to develop both the fabric and garment designs. This course will focus specifically on garments categorized as ‘knitwear’, rather than the increasingly popular cut-and-sew ‘activewear garment’ market, which will be addressed in a separate course.

Emerging from the circular knit and warp knitting technology that forms the backbone of the cut-and-sew industry, seamless garments are produced using advanced machinery that minimizes the need for additional seaming. This modern seamless knitting technology is now competing with the latest generation of complete-garment machines.
